Stop Making These Bread Storage Mistakes—These 7 Methods Keep Loaves Fresh for Twice as Long

I eat bread every day, sometimes in every single meal. It’s a part of every culture for a reason: Bread can support healthy digestion, healthier pregnancies, provide essential carbohydrates, boost your protein intake and support your heart health, depending on the type. It’s also just delicious, and sometimes that’s all you need!

The more fresh and whole-ingredient-focused your bread is, the better. But that could also lead to faster spoiling. Even if you buy a loaf from the grocery store, slices can quickly become spotted with fuzzy mold. And some breads turn out to have a seriously rock-hard, could-break-glass texture after a day. Bread needs the right environment to thrive. Linen bread bags are best suited for artisan loaves, while sandwich breads and English muffins are better stored in a bread box. I’m also a huge fan of freezing slices of fresh bread in a large, durable, reusable bag. Regardless of what you choose, remember that bread needs just the right amount of oxygen and moisture. All of the below options help you strike that difficult balance.

Bee's Wrap Beeswax Wraps for Bread

My favorite beeswax wrap brand makes a size specifically for storing bread, whether you’re proofing or storing the finished loaf. It’s made with beeswax, cotton, plant oils and tree resin. It seals with the warmth of your hands, creating a tight finish that lets excess moisture out but keeps the rest in, making it the perfect material for preserving loaves’ freshness.

Keeki Bag Beeswax Lined Bread Bag for Homemade Bread and Sourdough

This similar version comes with a drawstring, ideal for storing whole, round loaves. It, too, is lined with wax to keep just the right amount of moisture in for a soft interior, crusty exterior and a mold-free finish. If you’ve been wondering how to store sourdough loaves, this is an excellent pick for you.

Jumpstick Linen Bread Bag Set

Linen is an optimal material for bread, especially if you have a whole, artisan-style loaf that you want to keep out for a few days to cut and eat. The linen is breathable and light, covering your loaves just as much as you need. Once you do cut the bread, I recommend putting it cut-side down on your counter. This helps keep the interior nice and fluffy!

New Living Cotton and Linen Bread Bag Set

At $10 for two, this inexpensive option is made using a cotton and linen blend. The breathable nature of both materials provides the right environment for warding off mold and preventing rock-hard loaves, whether you’re enjoying sandwich bread or an artisan loaf. I appreciate that the longer shape suits more oblong-shaped loaves. You can also continue to reuse the bags over and over again.

Oggi Stainless Steel Roll-Top Bread Box

Don’t overlook this seemingly vintage form of kitchen storage. Bread boxes encourage an excellent environment for homemade or store-bought bread. Because they come with a door, they will contain moisture and help shield your bread from light, while still allowing enough airflow. This simple bread box has a roll-top door that provides plenty of space to grab whatever you need. The door is also see-through, so you know exactly what’s inside.

Etmi Bamboo Bread Box

If you prefer a wooden option, this bamboo bread box is equally as aesthetically pleasing as it is effective. The vintage-inspired door has a beautiful ribbed design, while the box itself is a neutral-toned bamboo. The door folds down like an oven to give you plenty of space to add multiple types of bread or remove loaves for slicing.

Stasher Mega Stand-Up Silicone Large Bag

$35

My favorite bread storage method is to freeze it. I immediately cut my sourdough loaves from the bakery and put them into an airtight bag, then place them in the freezer for weeks, if not months. I grab a slice at a time and pop it into my air fryer toaster oven to refresh it for breakfast. This Stasher bag is one of the few reusable silicone options that’s big enough to hold slices and is durable enough to protect bread from freezer burn. It has a super airtight seal—more so than any plastic bag we’ve tried.
